At Star Systems Talent, our goal is to make our dance competitions fun, welcoming, and exciting. However, it’s not all fun and games. On the day of a big dance competition, tensions can be high, the atmosphere can be hectic, and it can feel like a complete whirlwind. But we’re here to offer up some words of wisdom about how to handle the stress like a total pro. Keep reading to learn five tips to nail competition day!

5 Competition Day Tips

  1. Eat Well: Fueling your body for a competition is important to your overall performance. If you weigh your body down with junk food or skip eating before a competition entirely, it can severely affect your performance on stage. Make sure to eat a good meal before the competition and during breaks. Good options for snacks to keep you fueled throughout the busy day include celery and peanut butter, hummus, apples, hard boiled eggs, trail mix, or healthy protein bars.
  2. Don’t Make Last Minute Changes: On the morning of the competition, it can be tempting to try and add some last minute changes to your routine. After all, the stakes are higher now than ever. But this will only lead to confusion. It is better to perfectly execute a routine you have been practicing for weeks than mess up on a complex move you just thought of this morning.
  3. Make A List: We can’t tell you how many times students forget costumes or other must-have competition items. The week before a dance competition, make a list of everything you might need. The night before, put everything in the car so it’s ready to go. The morning your leave, do one last runthrough of every single item you’ll need down to the very last ponytail. You might think you have everything you need stored in your head, but the stress of competition day can make your mind go blank, in which case you’ll be glad you made a list!
  4. Sleep Is VERY Important: They say that driving while sleep-deprived is just as dangerous as driving while drunk. And you wouldn’t try to compete at a dance competition while under the influence! However, thousands of dancers every year forego sleep thanks to last-minute rehearsals and pre-competition nerves. Dancing while sleep-deprived can lead to a lack of focus, forgetfulness on stage, and an inability to keep up with the rhythm thanks to slow reflexes. One of the best ways to get a good night’s sleep before a competition is to make a list like we just said so your mind doesn’t have to wander thinking, “What if I forget this!?” Also, make sure to skip any afternoon caffeine the day before a competition, and try meditating or reading before bed to get relaxed.
  5. Don’t Compare Yourself To Other Dancers: This is one of the hardest things to do, especially because you’re at a dance competition where people are judged on their routines. However, don’t get caught up on what other dancers are doing. Watch them with an appreciation for dance, not as your potential competition. Although we are very proud of all of the dancers who place at our competitions and we know they worked hard everyday to get there, it is also important to remember that competitions are about the experience, not about winning.
