Just like with all major sports, the world of dance competitions has a “season.” Competition season typically starts with regional dance competitions in late December or January, and continue through the spring. National dance competitions will generally pick up in early summer and go through July or August. So, what should dancers be doing in the “off-season” to prepare for upcoming competitions? We have a few ideas! Keep reading to learn some tips to stay competition ready throughout the year.
Participate In Local Performances And Recitals
You never want the first time you perform in front of an audience to be at a regional dance competition. You will want to get your feet wet first, so to speak. Use your dance studio as a resource to find local events that might need some entertainment. Options you can find almost anywhere include performing at local senior centers, schools, and festivals.
Keep Going To Dance Class
As a dance, you never stop learning and improving — unless you stop going to lessons. Your dance instructor will be able to work with you during the off-season to help you perfect your moves and become better and better.
Watch Others Dance
Spend time getting some dance inspiration by watching dance themed TV shows or YouTube videos of dance performances. You’ll be amazed at all the talented performers out there, and you’ll have some time to practice new routines and styles before the next competition.
Have Some “Me” Time
Many of our dancers are in elementary school, so the concept of “me” time might not make sense. To parents of young dancers, then, we suggest finding ways for your kiddos to unwind and relax, whether it’s a day at the park, seeing a movie, doing arts and crafts, or having a sleepover at a friend’s house. Having some no-pressure time away from the dance studio is just as important as going to practice. Older dancers might enjoy hanging out with friends, going on road trips, or seeing concerts that help them get their minds off of upcoming competitions or certain moves that they’re having trouble perfecting.
Register For A Dance Competition
The sooner you register for an upcoming dance competition, the more time you’ll have to prepare. Registering during the off-season is a great way to develop a timeline for how much you will need to practice, when you should have your choreography arranged by, and so forth. Star Systems hosts dance competitions all over the country and we would love to see you at one of our regional competitions.
